England Combined Events Championships
Bedford 8/9 August 2015
Matt Chandler from Balfron was celebrating his first ever medal at a UK level event after winning a superb bronze at the England Combined Events championships at Bedford. Competing in the under 15 boys Octathlon, Matt took on the best athletes from throughout the UK in 8 different events over 2 days.
He opened well with 12.61s in the 100m into a headwind to go into 3rd place. He then had an excellent High Jump clearing 1.71m to win the event and move up to 2nd. Personal bests at Javelin (31.06m) and 400m (61.01s) meant he held onto 2nd place at the end of the first day making it a Scottish 1-2 with Joel McFarlane of Arbroath holding the lead.
Another good performance in the 80m Hurdles (12.09s) maintained 2nd place. Matt then set another pb in the discus (24.04m) but slipped to 3rd place. He then set a personal best 2.90m at Pole Vault to keep him in clear 3rd place going into the final 1000m event. Matt built a clear lead over the 2nd placed athlete but didn’t win by the required margin. However he safely held onto 3rd place meaning he had won the bronze medal overall. This made it a family double as Matt’s brother Tom Chandler won the bronze medal in the England under 20 Decathlon championships at the same venue in May.
Matt was not the only Central athlete competing as his Balfron schoolmate Matthew Meredith had made the long trip to Bedford as well. Matthew set personal bests at 100m (12.92s), 80m Hurdles (13.88s) and javelin (20.37m) on his way to a respectable 7th place finish.
