The climax to the UK’s domestic Cross Country Season was again played out in Cofton Park, Birmingham at the Inter-counties Championships including the final of the UK Challenge Cross Country Series for 2015/16. As always at such a prestigious event the cream of British endurance running was present as athletes from all over the country tackled challenging courses in pursuit of both individual and team medals. Club vests were swapped for County vests with Central athletes wearing the black of Scotland East.
Kate Gallagher, fresh from her mid-week victory at the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships, led home the East District Under 17 Womens Team to deliver a set of Gold Team medals. Kate’s seventh place overall was further evidence of her potential as she covered the 5 kilometre course in 20min 36secs.
The Mens race, over a 12 kilometre course saw Alex Hendry (24th with 40min 11secs) and Dale Colley (33rd with 40.44) produce their best performances at this level as they made significant individual impact and a massive contribution to the Scottish East District Team lifting Silver medals.
Keir Howlieson made his debut at this level and never looked out of place as he finished 37th and third Scot, covering his 4.5 kilometre challenge in 16min 53secs. Fiona Thompson faced a top class International field in the 8 kilometre Senior Womens race coming through in 63rd place in a time of 33min 16secs.
Fanni Gyurko and Jennifer Wetton made the trip to Inverness to compete in the Half Marathon on Sunday 13 March and came away with top honours in the ladies race with Fanni winning in a personal best of 77min 44secs. Jennifer was testing her fitness after a long injury hit lay-off and will be pleased with her second place run of 80min 1sec.
