Scottish Women’s Athletic League Grangemouth
The first track match of the Scottish Women’s Athletic League kicked off with a strong performance by the Forth Valley team as they took second place at Grangemouth stadium.
There were wins for Central AC members of the team through Katie Sharkey in the under 15 sprint hurdles, Katie Burr in the under 13 hurdles, Amy Kirkpatrick in the under 13 800m, Catriona Laing in the under 17 300m and by the under 15 relay team, and further wins in the B events by Lucy Smith (under 15 hurdles), Grace Tindall (Under 13 800m and shot put), Emma Mailer (under 15 200m), Lucy Mason (under 17 200m) and Ciorstadh Ainsworth(under 15 800m). The spirit of the day was captured in the final track event, the senior 4 x 400m, when three Central runners and Victoria Stephen of Dunfermline track club combined for one of the best race performances of the day, but with Forth Valley just being pipped on the line. Leading off with a 61.7 split Catriona Laing brought her team into changeover in second place for Sarah Pearson to take the team into the lead with a 59.9s timing, passing on to under 17 Laura McCullough who held onto the lead with a 62sec lap, but with Edinburgh final leg runner coming back to pip the team in the very last couple of metres, with Forth Valley posting a 4:06 timing for second place well ahead of other opposition.
Points total were Edinburgh 487; Forth Valley (462); Team West (427); Aberdeen (375); Tayside 371; VPGlasgow 314; Pitreavie 272; and Lothian 258.
Forth Valley’s winning Under 15 relay team, comprised of Rebecca Calder (Livingston), Jade Hutchison (Dunfermline), Katie Sharkey (Central) and Emma Mailer (Central), were comfortable winners of the under 15 relay race with a superfast 51.19 timing,
