The Invitational English 6 Stage Road Relay Championships was again held in Sutton Park, Birmingham on Saturday 8 October. Central Athletic Club’s Andrew Butchart recorded the fastest leg of the day, covering the 6 kilometre course in 16min 29secs. Overall there was a highly competitive race for gold medals with Cardiff AAC (1hour 45mins 52secs) prevailing over Welsh rivals Swansea Harriers (1-45-55) by just 3 seconds with the lead see-sawing throughout.
With some 79 teams completing the course Central’s effort saw them finish seventh overall in 1hour 47mins 23secs. Once again there was interest and drama throughout for both athletes and spectators. Dale Colley started Central’s effort with an 18min 16secs clocking to see the team in a close up 27th place at the first changeover. Alex Hendry moved through the field on his second leg run as he pulled the team up to 21st with a strong 18min 11sec leg. Alastair Hay used all his fitness and experience to bring the team through to 14th place with an excellent 17min 59secs effort. Conan McCaughey showed great form to keep the team in contention with an 18min 12secs clocking and the team in 16th.
Andrew Butchart showed his rivals and the spectators just why he was a high placed Olympian in Rio with his storming run pulling the Central team through to sixth overall with a time of 16.29, 20secs faster than any other runner on the day. It was left to Jamie Crowe to complete Central’s efforts on the final leg, recording 18min 16secs to bring the Central team home in seventh.
