The climax to the UK’s domestic cross country season was played out at a new venue, Prestwold Hall, Loughborough, at the Inter-counties Championships including the final of the UK Challenge Cross Country Series for 2016-17. As always this prestigious event attracted much of the cream of British endurance running as athletes from all over the United Kingdom tackled an undulating course, with the now-familiar mud, in pursuit of both individual and team medals. In this event Club vests were swapped for County vests with Central athletes wearing the black of the Scotland East team.
Morag MacLarty was the first of Central Athletic Club’s athletes to toe the line, covering the 8 kilometre course in 31min 36secs to finish 25th and making a massive contribution to Team Silver medals for the Scotland East Senior Women.
Under 15 Ben MacMillan was making his debut at this level and completed the 4.5 kilometre course with a fine run in 16min 58secs. Ben will have picked up great experience at this event especially on the strength of the opposition.
Kate Gallagher was another Central athlete to contribute to Team Silver medals in the Under 17 Women’s race, finishing the 5 kilometre course in 20min 38secs in 8th place with another strong run.
The Senior Men’s race was the final race of the day, over a 12 kilometre course, and here Jamie Crowe (18th with 39min 44secs) produced another high quality run finishing as third Under 23 athlete.
