Scottish Senior Championships – Grangemouth – 26 and 27 August 2017
The ten Central Athletic Club Senior athletes who competed at the weekend’s 125th Senior Scottish Track and Field Championships left Grangemouth with one gold, one silver and three bronze medals plus a smattering of personal best and season’s best performances.
The Central contingent had to wait until the final track event of the weekend to strike gold and here it was Dale Colley who, in a tactical race, always put himself in the right place to sprint past the 2016 Champion, Matthew White (Derby AC) for a fine victory in a season’s best time of 3 min 56.85 secs.
Saturday’s 3000 metre Steeplechase saw strong challenges from Aidan Thompson (9 min 34.17 secs) and Michael Wright (9-39.45) as they pushed through for silver and bronze medals while David Lindsay should also be pleased with his sixth place in 10-42.14.
Alastair Hay was always to the fore in the 5000 metres where he ran strongly to take the bronze medal with a season’s best of 14 min 27.64 secs and here Fraser Logan used the quality race to reduce his personal best by some 10 seconds to 16-4.14.
Amy Gullen picked up Central’s sole Field event bronze with an equal season’s best clearance of 1.61 metres in the high jump to further underline her consistency in the event.
Graham Porterfield was just outside the medals with a fourth place best of 11.53 metres and yet another season’s best in the shot put. Peter Muirhead continues to experiment with a left foot take-off in the long jump and here had a best effort of 6.74 metres; doubling up with heat and semi-final runs in the 100 metres of 11.17 and 11.24 secs, while Michael Currie was close to his personal best with a fine 22.94 secs effort in the 200 metre.
