The invitational English 6 Stage Road Relay Championships was again held on the traditional Sutton Park course in Birmingham on Saturday 7 October. Central Athletic Club’s team was all change from 2016 with all the local runners gaining great experience and again making an impact at this high level of competition. Aidan Thompson was charged with first leg responsibility and covered the 6 kilometre course in 18min 27sec bringing the Central team through in 33rd place.
Iain Davies took time off from his studies to record 18min 52sec on the second leg with the team now in 39th place of the 84 contenders. Ruaridh Miller picked up the third leg challenge to finish with 19min 44sec and the team now in 45th placing. Lewis Millar started to pull back places for Central with his 18min 45sec leg bringing Central through to 40th overall. The penultimate leg saw international orienteer, Chris Smithard, gain a further ten places with his 18min 28sec effort.
Cameron Milne showed his class on the final leg to bring the Central team home in 26th place, covering his leg in 17min 48sec, the fastest time by a Central runner on the day, giving a club time of 1hour 52min 13sec.
Overall, there was a relatively easy win for last year’s second placers Swansea Harriers (1-45-16), the team coming through from tenth on the first leg and their top athlete, Dewi Griffiths, proving to be the fastest runner on the day with a superb 16min 40sec effort.
