The first race in the Central Athletic Club’s 2017-18 Cross-Country Series was held on Sunday 5 November, in bright conditions, on a flat course in Cochrane and Johnstone Parks at Alva with a field of 46 runners.
It was Under-15 Finlay Muir who continued his fine early season form to win with 3min 51secs. Others in this age group were Ben Hughes who impressed to finish with 4.09 ahead of the improving Angus Henderson (4.10) while Finlay Brown had a strong effort to finish with 4.37. Amongst the Under-13 Boys it was Connor Bell who again went to the front to finish in 4.04 being chased home by Euan Campbell (4.11), Euan Docherty (4.16) and Cameron Darnborough (4.21). As the Under-13 Boys poured through there were further classy performances from Ryan McGuire (4.23), Ethan Sorley (4.39), Innes Brown (4.43), Kyle Saunders (4.59) and Andrew Twigg (5.04).
There was a superb turnout of Under-11 Boys headed home by Aaron Middleton (4.22) with Owen Eckersley (4.36) also showing true resolve. Matthew Kealy ran well to record 4.46 leading in Sam Gardner (4.47), Murray Henderson (4.49), Oliver Ditchfield (4.53), Conall Paterson (5.01), Logan Bell (5.03), Cameron Pollock (5.07) and Sam Jones (5.10). Special mention should be made of the sole Under-9 Boy, Ray Taylor, who ran strongly throughout to be rewarded with a 4min 22secs timing.
Under-15 Girl Grace Tindall also brought her impressive early season form to bear finishing in an excellent 4min 13secs. There were more useful performances in this age group through Lois Burch (4.34) and Lucy Yates (4.41). Melissa Turnbull (4.14) continues to impress as she led home a large contingent of Under-13 Girls including a top performance from Amy Cully (4.15). Catriona Kane (4.27) and Anna MacKinnon (4.28) were others to shine in this competitive age group as they led home Mary Kealey (4.38), Summer MacLean (4.40), Brogan MacMillan (4.48), Ellen Montgomery (4.57), Harriet Ditchfield (5.01) and Hana Littlejohn (5.35).
There was competitive running throughout the Under-11 Girls age group with Niamh McKinlay (4.53) holding off Elizabeth Woods (4.55). The future of this age group looks assured through Mara Gillan (5.12), Connie Bateman (5.41), Sophie Appelbe (5.43), Amy Fulton (5.44) and Issy McGuire (5.47). The Under-9 Girls, Ciara Middleton (5.51) and Sarah Marshall (6.04) both passed this test with flying colours.
