There were some tasty contests at the Glasgow Athletics Association Miler Meeting in Scotstoun, Glasgow on the evening of Friday 27 July with both East District and Masters’ medals up for grabs in a series of 5,000 Metre track races. The event was punctuated by thunder and lightning storms and heavy rainfall which didn’t stop some top class performances from Central Athletic Club athletes.
While it was Scottish Cross Country Champion Kristian Jones of Dundee Hawkhill Harriers who won the East Senior Men’s race in 14min 6.38secs, he had some top class opposition as Central athletes Alastair Hay (14:12.03) and Jamie Crowe (14:13.77) picked up the Silver and Bronze medals, with Alastair improving his personal best for the distance. Telfer Gray’s first track 5,000 Metres saw him bring home a deserved Under-20 East District bronze medal with a fine 16min 57.98secs effort. In the Masters’ ranks, David Eckersley’s excellent 18min 18.33secs run saw him winning silver in the M55 Scottish Championships.
There were other top performances from Aidan Thompson 14min 36.31secs, in his track debut for the distance while Michael Wright continued his fine season with a 15:07.73 personal best. Matthew Sutherland ran his first track race of the season to record 4:15.55 for 1,500 Metres.
Five Central Athletic Club athletes have been selected to compete for Scotland in the annual Celtic Games Track and Field International to be held at Grangemouth on Saturday 4 August. The competition covers a full programme for Under-18 athletes and a number of events for Under-16 athletes.
The opposition features teams from Wales and Ireland and there will be two Scotland teams on show, the Celtic team and a Futures team with the event giving many of the athletes their first taste of International competition and providing a great opportunity for further progress.
The Central Athletic Club athletes who have been selected for the event are Emma Mailer in the Under-18 Celtic Team for 400 Metre Hurdles and Elizabeth Thompson in the same team for the 4 x 400 Metre Relay. The Under-16 Celtic team features Daniel Ferguson in the 100 Metre Hurdles plus Coirilidh Cook in the 80 Metre Hurdles and both Daniel and Coirilidh also selected as part of the Under-16 Mixed Relay pool. Anna Cameron has been selected to compete in the Scotland’s Futures team in the Under-18 Long Jump and the 4 x 100 Metre Relay pool.
