Central and South of Scotland League. Scotstoun 18th March. The first track meeting of the summer season saw Central AC athletes achieve third position in the first match of the Division 1 Central and Southern Scotland League. A contingent of over fifty athletes mastered wet conditions at Glasgow’s Scotstoun track. The final unscrutinised result was Giffnock North 1st (734), Kilbarchan (581), Central (552), City of Glasgow/Shettleston (548), City of Edinburgh (542), Whitemoss (497), Falkirk Victoria Harriers (472) and Ayr (452).
Track event wins by Central were difficult to come by. Highlights included a storming finish from Alistair Hay to win the 5,000 metres, Hazel Dean winning a competitive veterans 800 metres and the under 13 boys team with a dominant relay win. Rather it was a string of high quality second and third places that made up the bulk of improved performances. Sarah Hay took second places in both 300 metres and 100 metres in the under 17 age group with times of 42.2 s and 12.9s, Michael Gillespie achieving second in the under 17 800 metres, with Fiona Chalmers making her senior debut with a second place and 59.0 s for the 400 metres. The senior 100 metres saw Elayne Henderson taking on Kilbarchan’s GB international hurdler, Alyssa Fullelove. In one of those ‘what happened next?’ moments Elayne pressed Alyssa all the way and took the lead with ten metres to go but stumbled, fell and slid the last few metres, and still achieved second place on the ground. Despite heavy burns, Elayne returned to her long jump where she won. Other field event wins included those from Ryan Stewart in the shot. Surprise performance of the day came from Hilary Warkentin with second place in a debut high jump of 1.32 metres to support a significant improvement in her long jump to 3.95m.
