Cross Country

Cross Country -  Further Information by Jane Waterhouse

Cross Country races involve fairly large numbers of runners with a wide range of ability.  Anyone fit enough to run the distance can compete for the club as an individual or part of a team, (ask your coach for advice about your suitability for competing). All athletes run in Club Vests and must be members of Athletics Scotland. (Membership forms available off website; www.scottishathletics.org.uk)

Details of races are usually sent to the club secretary and copies are handed out to athletes a week or so before the event. You can also usually find details on the Scottish athletics website.  It is advisable to arrive at races at least one hour before race start time in order to register, walk course and warm up. Races start EXACTLY on time. Warm clothing is essential and a change of clothes for wet weather is a good idea.  Races are very rarely cancelled because of adverse weather conditions.

East District League

There are 3 races in this league.  This year they are at Livingston, Kirkcaldy and Corstorphine. At each race each age group obtains points for each runner based on their finishing position.  It is important to have full teams (numbers differ for each age group) as incomplete teams receive heavy penalty points.  Points for all three races are added together for each age group to get the winning clubs and individuals.

Open Races

Athletes enter themselves on the day of the race i.e. pay fee of around £2.00 and collect their own numbers. Open races are open to all athletes although some do not have U11 age groups.

Pre Entry District/National Championship Races

Athletes are entered by Team Manager approximately 2 weeks before the event. Numbers are collected on the day by the Team Manager and distributed to the athletes. It is your responsibility to inform the Team Manager, in good time, if you wish to be entered for these races. Fees are paid with entry forms but athletes will be required to reimburse manager.

School Events

There is no club involvement and schools are responsible for their own entries. It is important you make your PE Dept aware that you wish to be entered for School Championships in good time. DO NOT ASSUME that your school has entered you.

SAF Selection Races

Athletes who have been selected to run for the District/National teams will be informed by letter from Scottish Athletics.
