Roddy just about held that position going round in 15.22 and handing over to Tom Watson in an overall 21st position. Tom ran a storming final leg in 14.28 (including a dramatic sprint finish to make up another place right on the finish line) making up eight places in all to finish in an overall 13th position  in a total time of 44.45 ahead of 30 Clubs from all over the UK. Team Manager for the day Alex Milne prepared the boys well with an inspirational team talk which took the breath away almost as much as the race itself.

Robert Russell and Hayley Haining win Stirling 10k

Great Britain international Hayley Haining was the outstanding performer at the fifth City of Stirling 10Km road race on Sunday 17 September.

The 33 year-old Kilbarchan athlete smashed the women's course record by more than two minutes when finishing third overall from a field of 688 runners in a superb time of 32min 36sec.

That's the fastest time by a UK athlete on British soil this year and the third quickest by a Brit anywhere, behind Englishwoman Mara Yamauchi's 31:43 in Japan and Scot Kathy Butler's 32:24 in Atlanta.

Haining was well clear of her nearest rival, Rebecca Moore, who equalled the previous record time of 34:44 set by Toni McIntosh three years ago.

Former UK international Sandray Branney (City of Glasgow) was third in 36:40 while Stirling title-holder Ros Alexander (Carnegie Harriers) had to settle for fourth in 37:05.

Scottish international Robert Russell, 23, won the men's title for the third time in the five-year history of the event.

The Auchterarder runner clocked 30:56 while his Central  clubmate Alastair Hay, the 2004 winner, was runner-up in 31:24.

These were the only men to run quicker than Haining.

688 runners finished the race Central AC organised race, which was fully subscribed.
