Young Athletes League - Dumfries 7th May

An exceptional team result for Central AC girls team, some outstanding results for boys and a bucketfull of personal bests were rewards for Central AC teams at the Scottish Young Athletes League match at a damp Dumfries track. The girls and their manager Linsey Cameron were well particularly pleased with a second place behind a powerful Kilbarchan team, but showing a clean pairs heels to the other strong girls clubs of City of Glasgow and Ayr.

The under 13 team squad topped off their individual results with a emphatic relay win for Megan McNab, Lara Roessler, Louise Anderson and Rachel Adamson. Rachel had a busy afternoon with a win in her B race 150m sprint in 21.4s and then 20minutes later went to win her specialist 1200m race with a scorching last lap and a fast time of 4m16s. Lara won her 70m hurdles in emphatic style in 13.2s, took third place in the 150m sprint in 21.9s and second place in the long jump with 3.90metrers. Louise showed further improvement in her personal bests with first place in the B long jump with 3.60m and fourth in the A 75m sprint in 11.5s. Megan teamed up here to take third place in the B 75m. Megan and Lauren Steele worked hard in a tough 800m with Megan recording 2m56s for 6th place and Lauren took 4th place in the B race with a shade over 3minutes.

In the under 15 girls, top points went to Ashley Smith with her shot with a throw of 7.87m, well supported by Mairi Gillespie with 3rd place in the B event with 6.01m. Ashley then took on the 200m and achieved an excellent time of 30.6s. Katie-Mairi King followed in the B race with 5th in 32s. Katie-Mairi had a busy afternoon with a 15.00s fifth place in the 100m and 16.0 debut as an under 15 over the sprint hurdles. Jennifer Kean planned a full afternoon after a long injury lay-off, but after a hesitant 100m (5th in 15.2s) she had to watch the rest of the match from the sidelines after further injury worries. In the distance events, twins Lorna and Fiona Cameron took on the 800m, with Lorna again looking strong to gain 5th place in 2m31s and Fiona still looking for last year’s form but with good points and 4th place in the B event. The 1500m was a tough race with Kate Morris sticking with the lead group until the final run in, and pleased with her run to 5th in a new personal best of 5m21s. Mairi Gillespie always looked good just behind her to take good points in the B race.  Amber Stevens and Lorna Cameron teamed up to take third and second in the A and B high jump with 1.35m and 1.35m respectively. Ashley, Katie-Marie, Lorna and Kate made up  the relay and were pleased to gain 4th place.

The under 17 age group is the decisive one in this league and the five girl contingent from Central performed exceptionally well. Gemma Milne turned her training form into practice with a fine second place in the 800m with big new personal best of 2m34s. She matched this position with fine throws in both shot and discus. Rachel Hunter had a good run in the 800m with 2m36s, but her big step up in form in the 300m saw her gain 3rd place in the A race with 46.9s. But her biggest surprise was saved for the long jump where she won the B event with a 4.16m new best. Nicolle Guiliani moved from novice to experienced points scorer with a new best of 13.9s in the 100m B race, taking third place in the long jump setting a PB of 4.46m  and then took on her first 200m taking 2nd place in the B race with 29.5s. Jennifer Hutchison led the day off with a good race for second place in the 300m hurdles with a time of 50.6s. The sprint hurdles against tough opposition gave her 5th in 14.0 and her ever improving discus yielded good points with a second place. Dee Henderson showed her experience with a speedy 3rd pace in 13.7s in the A 100m , third in 28.4 in the 200m and a good shot put to take second B in 6.83m. Dee then anchored the relay team to an excellent second place.

Central’s young males team found it harder going in the team rankings with just two under 17 men, and gaps in the younger age groups. However, the young men did themselves proud with fine performances from one and all. Young iron man Ross Milne deserved great credit with an outstanding display in his 800m for under 13’s. Winning this from the front, he took a huge slice off his personal best to achieve 2m26.9s, with younger brother Gordon picking up good points and another solid run in the B race. The 1500m was a classic race with Ross and a fresh Roddy Irvine pulling away from the field, with speed merchant Roddy out-kicking Ross on the run in, and taking maximum points in A and B races, both with new personal bests of 5m04.2 and 5m05.5 respectively.  Roddy showed his versatility with in the sprint hurdles in 16.3s for third place. In the sprints, Matthew Mills took 3
rd
place in 15.2s, with Jack Dawson in 2nd place in 15.5s. The 200m race saw the usual friendly rivalry between Matthew and Neil Cameron, Matthew taking 4th place in the A race in 30.5s and Neil winning the B race with 30.3s. The long jump led to Matthew taking second with 3.89m and Neil taking the first B place with 3.74m Ross Milne continued with good points form in he shot with 2nd place with 8.25m and Jack Dawson 2nd place in the B event in 5.34m. A fine relay win was a further demonstration of the strength of style and spirit in this young Central age group team.

The under 15 age group also had substantial personal improvements by the Central contingent. Kyle Henderson took 2nd place in the 200m with a new personal best of 25.2s, followed by Martyn Paterson with a new best of 27.1s to take second place in the B race. Kyle went on win the sprint hurdles with a new best of 12.7s. The 100m A race saw Martyn working hard against older and more powerful young men to take 5th in 13.6s, with Stuart Ardrey improving further with an excellent win in the B race with 13.1s. David Hutchison had a hard tussle in the 1500m to improve his best time to 5.8.3 for 5th place, in addition to lifting the same points with shot put. The long jump saw Kyle team up with Martyn both getting third place in the A and B events with 4.89m and 4.43m respectively.  Third place in the relay was further good result for this age group team.

The under 17 duo of Alex Hendry and Issac Sanchez took on two events each. Issac improved his personal best in both the 100m where he was 2nd in 12.9s and then 2nd in the 200m in 25.8s. Alex had a tough schedule, his 6th place in the 800m in 2m18.0s and third place in the 1500 with 4m45.2s both demonstrating his potential with another year in this age group.

British Junior League – Jarrow - 7 May 2006

The second of this Season National Junior League Matches was held at Jarrow in cold, overcast conditions that were not really conducive to top class Track and Field performances.  However the group of Central Athletic Club athletes that supported Team Forth Valley managed some highly creditable performances, which saw the Team finish third on the day.

Michael Wright looked good throughout his 2000metre Steeplechase, attacking the barriers and showing improved form on the water jump. Michael was rewarded with a hard fought victory in 6min 26.58secs, just two seconds outside his personal best. Earlier in the day Michael had hurdled to fourth in the ‘A’ 400metre hurdles, well backed up by David Devlin, making his debut in this event, and finishing in fourth ‘B’ placing.

Sean Reilly was another to show good form as he contested the 800metres to win the ‘B’ event in an excellent new personal best of 1min 58.9secs.  Angus Bell-Scott had shown improved form in his 400metres in the previous week’s Scottish Mens League, and here he contested the ‘A’ string 400metres, finishing strongly to again improve his personal best to 53.69secs in taking fourth place.  Scott McDonald was feeling ‘a bit out of sorts’ but still ran to 9min 25.40secs in the 3000metres to take a very useful second place, while once again David Devlin picked up good points with first ‘B’ placing in 10.36.46.

Stuart Chalmers had cleared an excellent 1.85metres in the High Jump the previous week but here his best was a 1.70metre clearance, which still picked up excellent first ‘B’ place points.

Elayne Henderson made her usual significant contribution to the team effort with first place in the Long Jump, a superb 5.57metre jump, and with third in both the High Jump (1.65metres) and in a highly competitive Javelin competition (30.58metres).  Tammy Breingan had agreed to fill a team spot at the last minute and, in spite of not being fully fit, ran well in the 100metres and carried the team through the first leg of the 4x400metre relay, an event rounded off by Elayne Henderson with a gutsy run of around 64secs to bring the team home in fourth place.  Rowena Bell-Scott was another to support the team without expecting too much following a recent injury.  Rowena contested the 3000metres and typified the team effort with excellent points from her first ‘B’ placing in 11min 26.16secs.

The final event of the day saw Sean Reilly and Angus Bell-Scott power round the first two legs of the 4x400metre relay, setting the foundations for a superb second place in this event.

Saturday’s performances included an excellent Gold medal for Ross Milne in the Under 13 Boys 800metres in a superb personal best of 2min 26.83secs with Conor Kerr picking up Bronze in the same event in 2.33.79. Ross (pictured with Conor below) showed his versatility in taking a Silver medal in the Shot Put with a throw of 8.32metrest.  Neil Cameron also picked up Bronze in the Under 13 age group with a fine 3.93metre Long Jump and showed good speed and determination to reach the Under 13 Boys 100metres final, finishing seventh in 15.05secs.  Jack Dawson was not at full fitness but still ran determinedly in his 100metre heat to finish in 15.78secs. There was success also in the Under 15 Boys age group with Ryan Stewart taking Gold and Silver respectively in the Shot Put (13.69metres) and Hammer (48.23metres). Kyle Henderson was another to strike Gold in the West Championships with a superb 12.95secs in the 80metres Hurdles, and rounded off his day with double Bronze medals in the 100metres (12.60secs) and High Jump (1.50metres).  Stewart Ardrey proved that he has made some excellent progress as he sped through to take Bronze in the East Under 15 Boys 100metres in 13.42secs with Martyn Paterson finishing fifth in 13.79secs, a position he equalled in the 200metres, finishing in 27.56secs. Martyn also showed good form in the Under 15 Boys Long Jump competition with a best of 4.71metres for sixth overall.  David Hutchison performed well in his chosen events, finishing sixth in the Under 15 Boys 1500metres in 5min 7.13secs and eighth in the Javelin in the Javelin with 14.73metres.

There was also success for the Club’s athletes in the Under !7 Age Group with Sean Reilly and Matthew Gillespie leading the way with Gold and Silver respectively in the 1500metres in 4min 13.71secs and 4.21.38. Jennifer Hutchison continues to make progress in the hurdles and here finished in Bronze position in the 80metres hurdles with 13.99seconds. Gemma Milne finished just outside the medals with fourth place in the Javelin with a very useful throw of 19.80metres and Isaac Sanchez showed good form for seventh place in the 400metres in 58.83secs.

There was a new format this year for the Senior and Under 20 Age groups with the two Districts combining in a Closed Scottish Championship, so it was good to see Michael Wright’s new personal best for the 3000metre Steeplechase (10mins 11.95secs) deservedly earn him Gold medals for the both the Senior and Under 20 Closed Scottish Championships.  It was good to see Kenny Pearson looking at his best in the Pole Vault and here he finished with a clearance of 3.60metrs to take home the Senior Silver medal. Michael Gillespie improved his personal best in a fast heat of the Senior 1500metres with a fine 4min 10.49secs clocking. Elayne Henderson contested the Senior 100metre Hurdles with sixth place in 16.25secs.  Rowena Bell-Scott is still making progress back to full fitness and here finished sixth in the 1500metres in 5min 16.14secs.  Angus Bell-Scott and Josh Clarke have been making progress this Season over 400metres and here were pitted against each other in the 400metres heats with both running well for very useful times of 54.04secs and 54.51secs respectively.

Sunday’s competition saw Central’s athletes again to the fore, non more so than Morag Maclarty who controlled her 800m senior race from the front, with a 2min 7.56sec timing pulling fellow international representatives Nicola Gauld and 400m convert Kathryn Evans to new personal bests.  Ainsley Normand was pleased to be in a highly competitive final, but left her best racing in her earlier heat with a 2m21s timing.

Elayne Henderson leapt out to 11.59metres in a highly competitive Triple Jump which saw the Scottish Record first equalled and then broken so Elayne’s fifth place with a jump of 11.59m was highly meritorious.

Under 13 Lara Roessler had a good day with her Bronze medal in the 100m giving her a new personal best of 13.95secs, followed by a Silver medal performance in the Shot Put with 7.24metres, just 1cm off the Championship title. Her disappointment of a below par 3.78m for 8th place in the Long Jump was soon forgotten. Rachel Adamson progressed through the heats to record a 5 second improvement in her personal best in placing fifth in the 800m with 2min 31.1secs.

In the Under 15’s, Lorna Cameron also made it through her 800metre heat with a second place and in the final produced 2min 33.98secs to finish eighth. Her sister Fiona was not able to make it through the heats though continues to improve on her early season form.  Ashley Smith had been demonstrating high quality throwing but on this occasion had to be happy with 7.17m for fifth place in the Shot Put final. Jemma and Amber Stevens teamed up together in the High Jump, with Jemma performing to form to win a well earned Bronze medal with a 1.45metre clearance and Amber improving her best to 1.40metre in taking fourth place.  Ellen Houston had a good run with a third place in 28.29secs in her 200metre heat, to qualify for the final, where unfortunately she found she could not improve her time.

In the Under 17 Womens Age Group Dee Henderson took on her specialist 200metre event but could not get beyond the heats, finishing with a 29.03secs timing. Gemma Milne continued to show her improved form in the 800metres with another demonstration of committed running and a fine 2min 35secs timing in her heat. Jennifer Hutchison made it a double set of Bronze medals in the hurdles, adding the 300metre Hurdles event to her tally, with a new personal best of 49.56secs.

Sean Reilly showed that the previous day’s effort had not blunted his speed as strode to Silver in the 800metres with another excellent personal best of 1min 57.26secs. Murray MacLarty rounded off Central’s contribution with a gritty run in the 5000metres to finish twelfth in 16min 21.22secs, taking a massive 24seconds off his personal best.

Dumyat Hill Race

This week also saw a good turn out from the Club in the Annual Dumyat Hill Race, held on 10 May, with another top quality performance from Alasdair Anthony in winning this race for the second time.

In the U11 boys Matthew Smith ran superbly to finish 2nd place in the 200m A race in a time of 33.6s and a further fine run by Phillip Wright also rewarded him with 3rd place in the B race in a time of 34.4secs. Both Anthony Gillespie and Alan Bennie competed to their usual high standards and received times of 2.24 secs and 2.31secs respectively. Unfortunately, though Ryan Stewart was more than ready to compete in the discuss, due to a technical problem at Livingston with the cage, he was unable to do so on this occasion.

Finally, the wet conditions did nothing to deter the spirit of the U15 girls, and  Becky Hay ran well in the 800m in a time of 2.49ses to achieve 5th place as also did Clare Tunaley in the B race a time of 2.55secs. Scottish Championships – Masters and Combined Events

The recent Scottish Masters and Combined Events Championships saw brother and sister duo, Kyle and Elayne Henderson making spectacular improvements in their respective Pentathlon and Heptathlon.  Elayne fought through her seven events (100mHurdles 15.67s, High Jump 1.63m, Shot Put 9.13m, 200m 26.05s, Long Jump 5.77m, Javelin 28.59m, 800m 2.37.92) for a fine overall personal best of 4619 points, the Under 20 Womens Gold Medal and many satisfying performances along the way. Kyle also showed excellent form over his five events in the Under 15 Pentathlon (High Jump 1.67m, 80m Hurdles 12.41s, Long Jump 4.77m, Shot Put 9.77m and 800m 2.30.74) again achieving personal bests on the way to his fine Bronze medal performance.

The Masters competition allowed some of Central’s more mature athletes to strut their stuff and it was good to see Frank Houston pick up a Gold and two Silver medals in the M40 age group through more than useful performances in his 110mHurdles (21.08secs), Long Jump of 5.25metres and High Jump of 1.60metres.  Steve Laing also picked up Gold with an excellent 4.28.56 clocking in the M45 1500metres but had to settle for fourth in the 800metres (2.13.31). Alex Milne also proved that he can still compete with the best with his Silver and Bronze performances in the M40 age group with 1500m (4.29.70) and 800m (2.07.04) respectively.

These Championships also featured some Young Athlete Championship races over 3000 metres and it was good to see young Sean Reilly competing with the best and taking a very close up Bronze medal in the Under 17 Mens 3000metres, to finish with an excellent 8min 56.82secs clocking.  Matthew Gillespie (9.10.12) and Alex Hendry (9.55.47) should also be pleased with their performances at this level and their eight and twelfth placings.  Michael Wright contested the Under 20 Mens 3000metres but, unusually, left his best form behind, following some excellent early season steeplechase races, finishing in 9.44.62 for sixth overall.
