Central AC - Club Championships
Grangemouth Stadium - 16 September 2006
The Central Athletic Club Track and Field Club Championships were held on Saturday 16 September at Grangemouth Stadium. With athletes from Falkirk Victoria Harriers and Kirkintilloch Olympians also contesting their Championships there was a good standard of competition for the young athletes.
The Under 11 saw some exciting competition with good sprinting from Aimee Bilsland and Mary Gathergood. Kathryn Gillespie reduced her 800 metres best to 2minutes 40.5seconds with another fine run. Nicole Lang and Isla Cubitt also proved competitive with their sprints and long jump combinations. Philip Wright was another to show good form in the sprints and long jump but it was disappointing to see that his only opposition in this age group was from Under 11 Boys from other Clubs.
There was little surprise in seeing the talented Stephanie O'Neil taking excellent points throughout the Under 13 Girls competition with a 14.2secs 100metres, 11.7secs for her 70metre hurdles effort and a superb 4.55metre long jump. Rachel Adamson underlined her continued progress including an excellent 2min 33secs clocking for 800metres and a superb 1.30metre high jump. Louise Anderson was another to enjoy her day of competition with new personal bests throughout, the highlight being a 14.4secs 100metres while Leila McLaren again showed her excellent sprinting form. There was a long list of Under 13 Girls who competed well, ensuring the Club has good continuity in this age group through Megan McNab, Stephanie Holman, Sarah Dick, Megan Jardine, Sophie Brown, Abby Housego, Kirsty MacLauchlan, Niamh Callan, Victoria Steele, Rebecca Stewart, Ruth McCabe and Shona and Kirsty Buchanan. The Under 13 Boys produced an intriguing contest with Roddy Irvine again using his sprint finish to devastating effect in the 800metres, reducing his personal best to 2min 23.7secs and clearing a highly respectable 1.40metres in the high jump. Ross Milne also showed great form over 800 and 1500metres and used the Shot Put (9.89metres) and Javelin (29.27metres) to pick up further excellent points. Conor Kerr was another to come through with good points and high quality performances in 800, 1500 and Javelin. Adam Innes contested the 100metres (13.6secs), 200metres (27.5secs) and Shot Put (8.86metres), on his way to a fine haul of points. Martin Hall and Tom Watson underlined their endurance credentials which will prove essential in the Cross Country Season and again there was a long list of athletes in this age group who produced excellent performances with Robbie and Calum Gathergood, Kelly Carruthers, Sam Fraser, Callum Sharp, Gordon Milne, Stephen Docherty and David Russell.
The Club’s Under 15 Girls were also well represented at the Championships and was Lorna Cameron who used her 800metres (2min 29.1secs), 1500metres and High Jump (1.30metres) to great effect. Jemma Stevens’ results of 1.45metres in the High Jump plus a 19.11metre throw in the Javelin and a good 75metre hurdles performance provided excellent points while Katie-Mairi King also used the 75metres hurdles along with the High Jump (1.30metres) and 100metres (14.6secs) to also provide a superb points haul. Kate Morris is another young athlete pushing to the fore in this age group and it was good to see Ashley Smith and Katherine MacAdam producing good solid performances. Becky Hay, Lily Eadie, Georgia Quinn, Catriona Buchanan, Fiona Cameron, Shona Frame, Toni Forbes and Katie Sharp all proved they were athletes to reckon with in their chosen events in this age group.
The highlight of the Championships was the Under 15 Boys contest between Ryan Stewart and Kyle Henderson, both Boys being the best athletes in Scotland in their preferred events. Ryan’s Hammer (53.57metres) and Javelin (53.28metres) were of the highest order. Indeed the Hammer throw was off the scale tables being used to gauge performances and Ryan proved to be no slouch in the 100metres, finishing in a useful 13.7secs. Kyle again showed outstanding Long Jumping form with 5.83metres and went on to record excellent sprinting times of 12.2secs over 100metres and 12.7secs for the 80metre hurdles. Scott Green’s performances were somewhat overshadowed by Ryan and Kyle but still weighed in with a good series in the 800, 1500 and Javelin.
Jennifer Hutchison proved to be the pick of the Under 17 Women with superb points from high class runs in the 300metres (42.49secs) and 300metre hurdles (46.7secs) providing the bedrock of her success. Lynn Harvey showed excellent sprinting form (100metres 13.6secs and 200metres 27.8secs) and a useful Triple Jump of 9.60metres and Lorna Frame underlined her progress with good sprinting and High Jump (1.35metres) performances. Gemma Milne provided her trademark middle distance performances of high quality while Nicole Giuliani was another to show excellent progress in sprinting and Long Jump. Kirsten Phillip’s High Jump, Susan Robb’s sprinting and Mellisa Mowat’s throwing again showed that the Club will continue to well served by these three athletes.
There was some good competition in the Under 17 Mens age group with Sean Reilly showing good form on the day, especially over 400metres (53.3secs). Scott McDonald worked well with the highlight being a quality 800metres (2min 3.4secs) and Isaac Sanchez Cruz showed high class and consistent sprinting from 100, 200 and 400metre runs. Josh Tierney also weighed in with good quality sprinting and a more than useful Long Jump of 5.03metres while Alexander Hendry and Ewan Hamilton were well to the fore in their chosen events.
It was unfortunate that none of the Club’s Under 20 or Senior athletes competed on the day but good to see Master Woman Elizabeth Normand providing a respectable series of throws performances including a Shot Put of 8.86metres and Frank Houston proving his ability in the 100metres (12.9secs), High Jump (1.55metres) and Long Jump 5.07metres in the Masters Men competition.
Thanks are due to the many Officials, parents and friends who helped to make the day a great success for the Club.
