The 55th running of the Allan Scally road relays took place on 28 February incorporating the Scottish Universities Road Relay championships. For the history of the man and this famous Scottish race, see https://shettlestonharriers.org.uk/about/the-allan-scally-race/. Central vests were only in evidence in one team but many other club student members were running for their universities. The race has less prestige than in the past for open clubs, but for university clubs it is a priority event. It has also diversified by encouraging community and corporate teams.
Teams comprise 4 runners, each running the same serpentine 5km on traffic-free paths around Glasgow Green. The promenading public are provided with some free entertainment on their Saturday walk in return for the inconvenience of dodging speeding athletes.
The Central team was led-off by Chris Fullerton (16:10), followed by Tony Disley (19:38), before Hugh Buchanan (22:48) finished the incomplete team’s run.
The male university runners from the club included Ian Jordan (Strathclyde) in 15:01 who came home with a team bronze, Jonathan Marshall (Stirling) in 15:48 and Gavin McCaffrey (Stirling) in 16:17. Among the women, Grace Whelan (Strathclyde) was the fastest in 16:45 and has a bronze team medal to add to her collection, but Tuscany Wright (Glasgow, 17:27) contested the bragging rights by running a big personal best to get her hands on a team gold. Another PB came from Niamh McKinlay (Stirling) in 18:33 who finished the first leg just a second ahead of wisdom-tooth-free Amy Gough (Dundee) followed by Leah Brown (Stirling, 20:26) and Robyn McKerracher (Glasgow, 23:54).
Craig Baillie (15:43) was skulking out of uniform in the community team “Arctic Cabbages”.
