Central track and field dominate at Indoor League finals
Central AC’s current strength in track and field events was evident on Sunday when athletes gathered at the Emirates to represent our club at the finals of the Indoor League. 10 teams had made qualified to compete – almost every age group which in itself is a great achievement.
At the end of the day Central had won four of the 10 age groups, as well as a silver and bronze in two others! There were numerous pbs, some absolutely dominant performances and some nail-biting finishes. Notable amongst the many great performances were the u11 boys team who dominated their age group, the u15 girls A team who won four of their individual events and came second in the rest. But the u20 women deserve special attention. There were three girls in the team, and two of them took on four events each to take the gold in that age group. Throughout the season a number of young athletes have developed both in skills and attitude towards competition. It has been a pleasure to see some younger athletes take on events they were unfamiliar with, adopt a ‘can do’ attitude; and benefit from it by discovering skills they didn’t know they had – this is, I believe, one of the greatest lessons competing in sport can teach.
The indoor league relays also took place with 19 teams competing in that. Central again achieved some great results. Almost every age group had a Central team in the final, if not the medals and a good number of golds came our way.
With around 100 athletes came their parents, a number of their coaches and numerous team managers. I would like, on behalf of the club, to thank every one of you for your commitment, effort and above all patience. The Indoor League puts through a huge number of performances every match and this can lead to fluctuations from the timetable. But our system of team mangers and involved parents supports this extremely well. Without the time and effort put in by these people, we simply wouldn’t be able to give so many young athletes the opportunity to compete.
Grateful thanks also from us all to Kenny Pearson who has not only advised and counselled throughout this winter season but came to the finals and timed every single athlete through their relay splits; noted team results and gathered data for the club database – a massive job. He will report on the details of performances.
Roll on the Summer track and field season. It looks set to be a strong one for the club!
