Central AC Press Report
Andrew Butchart kept his excellent track season moving along as he romped to 5,000metres victory at the Olympic Trials in Birmingham to secure his seat on the plane to Rio with 13min 44.00secs. Andrew, having run two sub 13.24 qualifying times earlier in the season, has also picked up Scottish 3,000metres and 5,000metres records and came to Birmingham full of confidence.
Central Athletic Club’s Andrew had to finish in the top two in the race to ensure Olympic selection so a relatively slow race built-up the tension. The Dunblane runner proved himself equal to all challenges as he surged to the front with four laps remaining, immediately pulling away from a top class field. He continued to extend his lead to almost 60metres as he celebrated victory over the length of the finishing straight.
“I’m buzzing with that, it went exactly how I wanted it to go, so I cannot ask for a better day. To win the British title and confirm my place in Rio is a great feeling. I have been so nervous coming into this as I knew what I had to do. I’ve not really raced some of these guys this year so you have no idea what shape they are in, so it is good to get the win.”
Tom Watson also travelled to Birmingham to compete in the 800metres where he put in a mighty challenge to finish third in the first heat, with 1min 51.75secs. With the following heats run in faster times Tom was disappointed to miss out on a place in the final by the narrowest of margins.
