Big Ben
The longest continuous climb in Britain sets the stage for the annual Ben Nevis race which took place on 5 September this year. It’s a 10 mile route - you start at the games field in Fort William and join the tourist track up the hill, cutting off the zig zags on the path if your legs are strong enough, reaching the top at a height of 1345m before turning to retrace your steps. Lewis McComb was the first Central athlete home, running 29th as he clocked 1:58:14, followed by Max Stevens in 2:19:25 as the fifth Men’s Under 23 and Allan Gall in 3:21:43 as the second V70. Team East Lothian open graded
John McDonald reports
While most eyes were on the Podfather Stirling 10K and supporting races, Under 16 athletes Rachel Fullbrook and Craig Hutchison were competing in the Team East Lothian Open Graded at Meadowmill in Tranent on Sunday 6 September.
Although Rachel has climbed to the top of the rankings in the 300 Metre Hurdles this year it had been some time since she tackled the flat 300 Metres. So no surprise that Rachel took a massive slice from her PB for the distance with a 43.77 seconds clocking. In contrast, and no doubt down to a 5.6m/s headwind, her 14.06 seconds for 80 Metres Hurdles was slightly down on her best.
It was good to see Craig tackling a 100 Metres and Long Jump combination, having been injured for much of the season so making a rare competitive appearance, clocking 14.54 seconds for 100 Metres and jumping a best of 4.02 metres in the Long Jump. Again the blustery conditions not aiding these performances. There are still enough competition opportunities left this summer for Craig to improve his performances.
