In one of the most exciting and closely fought races for years Central Athletic Club made a further step in their development as they finished with bronze medals in the Invitational English 6 Stage Road Relay Championships held in Sutton Park, Birmingham on Saturday 3 October.
With over 70 teams toeing the line for a course of six 6 kilometre laps there was interest and drama throughout for both the athletes and spectators. Aidan Thompson started Central’s effort with an 18min 23secs clocking to see the team in a close up 32nd place at the first changeover. Alex Hendry would have enjoyed his second leg run as he pulled the team up by 17 places with a storming 17min 31sec leg. Jamie Crowe picked up the third leg challenge to keep the pressure on with an 18.25 clocking and Central in 16th overall. Scottish Steeplechase Champion, Scott Green was on fourth leg duty as he pulled the team up to twelfth with a fine 18.12 run.
Andrew Butchart has had another fine year and here he proved his class as he moved the Club up to fourth overall as recorded the fourth fastest leg of the day with 17.19. It was left to the experienced Alastair Hay to finish off Central’s efforts as the final leg’s drama unfolded. With all to play for and leading positions changing throughout Alastair came through in 17.48 to ensure bronze medals for Central in an overall time of 1hour 47min 38secs. Winners, Tonbridge AC were only 14secs ahead and second placed Derby AC just 9secs in front.
Congratulations are due to all six runners and to their coach and master tactician Derek Easton.
The Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run Half Marathon also saw Central’s Michael Wright in the Elite Mens race, showing fine form throughout to finish 15th in top class company in a tasty 69min 45secs.
