SUPERteams Under-12 competition, 22 January

Jan 30, 2023

The club had two teams of boys and two teams of girls at the Scottish Athletics SUPERteams Under-12 competition at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Sunday 22 January.

Central AC’s boys scored a superb victory in the Under-12 SUPERteams competition against 47 teams from throughout Scotland. The competition tests teams of youngsters at running, jumping and throwing, then finishes with a relay.

Central were represented by Lewis Munro, Alfie Laing, Kyle McPake and Euan Robertson. They started strongly in the 60 Metres, Lewis running the fastest time out of 93 boys with 8.63s, Alfie fifth fastest with 8.97s, while Euan in 9.70s and Kyle in 10.03s also produced strong runs. The Shot Put saw personal bests all round with Kyle furthest at 6.01m, seventh furthest on the day, Euan throwing 5.48m, Alfie 5.07m and Lewis 4.69m. The Long Jump saw Lewis jump the third furthest of the day with 4.28m and Alfie tenth furthest with 3.89m, Euan jump a season’s best 3.42m and Kyle a personal best 3.35m. These performances gave the boys a good lead going into the final 4×200 Metres Relay event. A strong run from Springburn Harriers challenged the Central team’s lead but they got the baton round safely with the second fastest time and did enough to hang on for the win.

We believe this is the first time Central have won the SUPERteams since the Girls’ team won the inaugural event in 2009. That team included Kathryn Gillespie who went on to represent Great Britain, placing fifth at the European Junior Championships in the 1,500 Metres in 2015, and is still competing for the club at a high level as a senior. Hopefully some of these youngsters can continue to that level.

Central’s Boys’ B team also performed well, with personal bests all round for Hugh Thomas, Jack Campbell, Matthew Oven and Oliver McDonald finishing 17th place overall. Further good performances came from the Girls’ teams who also set new best performances. The B team of Amy Drysdale, Bella Milligan, Iona Clark and Susanna Horsburgh placed 19th overall, and the A team of Kayleigh Clifford, Olivia Denholm, Rachel Duncan and Zara Hector placed 39th overall. Overall they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience of competing at the Emirates Arena. Well done to everyone who took part.
