Cambus Quarter
The Cambus Quarter fills a unique distance slot with a flat Quarter Marathon over a figure of eight course on a mixture of quiet roads, unmade paths and grass. One hundred and thirty runners lined up at the start on Sunday 16 August, trying to outwit the ‘race the train’ element of a level crossing at the 8km marker and a train scheduled to pass 40 minutes after the start. Tony Disley was our first home just outside the top 10 in a very sharp 42:39 – sadly for him there were no veteran prizes. Laurie Douglas was the sixth woman home in a rapid 48:51 and Hugh Buchanan also managed to beat the train as he closed the club’s account in 51:53. Our fourth starter, Don Shaw, was stopped in his tracks by the Sunday joint as he swung past his house at the end of the first loop of the course – sadly for Don it was his dodgy knee joint and not a nice leg of lamb. Scottish 10k and half marathon
There was a classy turnout of Central athletes at the Scottish 10k and Half Marathon at Musselburgh on Sunday 16 August with both courses finishing on the racecourse there. The 10k was an out and back through Prestonpans and back and Jill Scott was our flag bearer as she clocked an impressive 58:19. Full results at https://www.scottish10k.com/results .
The half marathon course started at Tranent before heading east and turning beyond Longniddry to return to the racecourse. Jamie Crowe stormed to a clear victory in 64:19, equalling his personal best from 5 years ago and almost two minutes clear of second place – who knows what he might have done with a closer challenge. Luca Fanottoli was 11th across the line as he won a three way sprint finish but was edged out to 13th on his chip time of 70:48. In the women’s division, Grace Tindall picked up the women’s silver medal with 79:10, her best time for a couple of years, while Rebecca Olej was jumping as she clocked a fantastic personal best of 100:14. Cademuir rollercoaster
Most hill races in Britain go up and come down, but the Cademuir Rollercoaster by Pebbles on 15 August went up and down and up and down. There were two races: the shorter 3km with 105m of climb counting towards the Under 12 and Under 14 categories in the Scottish junior hill running league and the longer 6km with 275m of climb for the Under 16, Under 18 and Under 20 divisions.
Annie Arnott took to the hill in the first race, and swept round in 14:29 to give her third place among the Under 14 Girls. In the second race Alex Dunlop scored an excellent 25:57 to finish fourth Under 20, Thomas Arnott is in his first year among the Under 16s and fought hard to gain 31:28, closely followed by Ella Hunter in 31:59 finishing as third Under 16 Girl. The results are used for selection for the Scottish team of four Under 18s and four Under 20s at the British and Irish Championships to be held in September on the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland, and Alex will have to wait to hear the selectors’ decisions.
