Scottish Schools cross country 2026

Mar 9, 2026

The Scottish Schools Secondary cross country championships took place at Hopetoun House on the south shore of the Forth on Wednesday 4 March 2006. It’s always a high class competition with school teams from all over Scotland vying for prestigious victory, with the top handful of finishers guaranteed a place in the Scottish team to the home international held in late March, this year in North Wales. Schools came from Stornoway, Dingwall and Peterhead in the north and Kirkcudbright, Galashiels and Kelso in the south with the teams dependent on highly motivated teachers, some themselves previous competitors, to organise and transport the next generation of aspiring champions. Central’s athletes were out in force representing their schools. In addition to the individual results, team results are calculated from a school’s first 4 finishers in a race.

The first race was for Under 14 Girls, and it was Lila Robertson (Dunblane HS) who was the first club finisher in 79th (14:45) with Brooke McCreadie (Dunblane HS – 140th, 15:58) also helping the Dunblane team to a good mid-table placing of 16th with McLaren High School placing 20th.

This was closely followed by the Under 14 Boys and it was Brody Scanlon (Wallace HS) who led the club representation (80th, 13:17) pursued by a phalanx of Dunblane HS runners: Finlay Gallagher (89th, 13:24), William Barnes (91st, 13:29), Rory Meyler (138th, 14:23) and Lachlan Carruthers (152nd, 14:40). Unfortunately for Brody his Wallace team was incomplete, but the Dunblane team finished well in 23rd place.

The next Central runner in evidence was Thomas Arnott (Dollar) in the Under 15 Boys race running strongly in the pack to finish 54th (17:55).

The day moved on to the Under 17 races, where the Girls race was hotly contested and Ella Hunter (Dollar) produced a great run in 7th (16:42) with Emily Watkin (McLaren) not far behind in 25th (17:54 ). Among the boys, it was Fraser Cheyne (Dunblane HS) who worked hard in the middle of the field to record 68th place in 21:07.

The final category was Under 20 and in the Girls race Fia Watkin (McLaren HS) produced another gutsy run to finish 24th (18:49).

Congratulations to everyone.
