Central Athletic Club’s Senior Men’s Team headed to the Invitational English 12-Stage Road Relay Championships in Sutton Park, Birmingham, held on Saturday 8 April. Central’s team featured both youth and experienced athletes who tackled the traditional course of alternating long and short laps, at a race attended by the top English and Welsh Clubs and three Scottish Clubs through Central AC, Corstorphine AAC and Cambuslang Harriers. The event was played out in bright sunshine and high temperatures throughout as almost 70 teams toed the start line.
Central’s athletes were travelling more in hope than in expectation of a podium finish but saw the opportunity to gain experience of this unique event played out over almost four and a half hours of tough competition. In an event where fortunes fluctuate throughout the day the Central athletes acquitted themselves well to finish in 14th place overall and ahead of their Scottish rivals. Once again Team Manager Derek Easton, his support staff and all the athletes are due congratulations on another excellent effort.
Results from the twelve legs were Michael Wright (27:49), Iain Davies (17:06), Conan McCaughey (27:34), Scott Green (16:16), Cameron Milne (26:52), Matthew Sutherland (16:27), Alastair Hay (27:38), Ruaridh Miller (17:14), Ross Houston (30:02), Scott Brember (17:16), Jamie Crowe (27:35) and Aidan Thompson (16:11), giving an overall time of 4 hours 28 minutes. With another top-class field assembled it was good to see Scottish contenders Corstorphine AAC (4-30.31) and Cambuslang Harriers (4-32.55) finish in highly respectable 18th and 21st places respectively.
