The weekend started early this week with midweek event to include …
Dumyat Hill Race
Dumyat gives a cracking view over the Forth and beyond, but the 322 runners in the Dumyat Hill Race on Wednesday 6 April, which also hosts the Scottish Universities hill running championships, didn’t have much time to enjoy it before turning to run back down to the finish at the University sports centre.
Alex Dunlop, running for Strathclyde University, had a great run and finished fifth overall and third in the universities contest in 35:24. Jens Subke was part of a blanket finish for 71st place in a time of 45:57 and Sean Morrison wasn’t far behind in 140th (50:49).
Catriona Kane, now with Edinburgh University, finished in an excellent 51:52, Nuala Bell ran a self-timed 53:02 after a mixup with her timing chip and Kerry Watkin, more often seen enabling the performances of her daughters, was delighted to finish in 70:19.

Snowball 5
The Scottish Veteran Harriers organised their Snowball 5 mile championship at Coatbridge and Donald Shaw, Linda and Ally Cunningham were there. The race is named for the sponsoring confectionery but it was unexpectedly appropriate for the prevailing temperature.
Donald Shaw was the first of them back in his third race in five days in a sharp 33:44, while Ally was frustrated to be just outside 7 minute mile pace in 35:05 and Linda was busy making friends as she finished in 43:48.

Ben Lomond Hill race
The Ben Lomond Hill race is straightforward – start at the hotel at the bottom, follow the path to the top and come back down for a cup of tea (other refreshments are available). Max Stevens was Central’s standard bearer and came home in an excellent 9th in a time of 1:27:11. Full results at https://protay.co.uk/benlomond26/results.php#1_5BD0EB
Also on the hills, Joel Gillan has been named for the UK in the four person Under 20 uphill team at the European Off-Road Running Championships in Slovenia on 6-8 June.
Babcock 10k Glasgow Green
Fitting a 10k race onto Glasgow Green involves a certain amount of ingenuity with the resulting two lap course resembling on origami figure full of tight corners and folds. This year the race hosted the Scottish Athletics 10k championships and so the field was stacked and the competition fierce. Seven of Central’s men were there.
Aidan Thompson finished in an excellent sixth place in 29:49, just off the leaders’ pack and was closely followed by Logan Beagley (11th, 31:05), Luca Fanottoli (15th, 31:15) continuing his return to form and Iain Jordan finishing as the third Under 20 in 22nd place and a time of 32:04. Jack Honeyman will be pleased with his time of 34:28 and 52nd place and had Findlay Smith chasing him as he was logged as 73rd in 35:38. Donald Shaw in his fourth race in 10 days impressed with 41:37 – never underestimate an old man in a hurry.
Team results were calculated on the first three finishers and Aidan, Logan and Luca were rewarded with team silvers. The Babcock 10k series continues in 10 days’ time at Dumbarton. Full results at https://protay.co.uk/babcock-shettleston-10k-2026/#0_8F03F0
Thornhill 10k
The Thornhill 10k on Sunday 10 May, starting and finishing at the Community Hall, has a strong community atmosphere with over 700 runners taking part. The course runs on minor roads, leaving the village downhill towards Kippen Station before turning onto the Coldoch road after 4km and turning left again after 7km for the long climb back up to the village on the hill.
Emily Watkin whizzed round in 43:36 to take the junior prize, Nuala Bell was not far outside her PB in 46:58, impressive on this course, and Eve Watson recorded a rapid PB of 47:04. Fia Watkin was not far behind in 48:07 to join her sister on the junior podium and Sally Andrews had her best time for a couple of years in 52:02. The results don’t include club affiliations, so please comment if you know that we’ve missed a club runner. Full results at https://results.perfecttimingscotland.co.uk/Results.aspx?CId=20065&RId=3150
Loch Leven Half
The Loch Leven Half loops anticlockwise on minor roads around the loch and presents an undulating course which guarantees head winds at least some of the time. Central athletes posted some excellent times with Colin McCreadie (V40) leading the club at the finish in 87:32, Tony Disley setting a new PB of 89:24 having had to dig deep over the last couple of miles and Phil Sweeney (V40) who will be very pleased with 90:37, his fastest half for a good number of years.
