A summary of competition action over the last seven days.
Blast off!
This month’s Blast 5k at Edinburgh’s Meadows took place on Tuesday 12 May over the usual two lap course with a brisk northerly wind to scatter the remaining cherry blossom. Ally Cunningham was first home among the club’s representatives in 22:19, followed by Hugh Buchanan in 23:06. Linda Cunningham was delighted with her 25:16 and Jill Scott continued her recuperation from injury with 28:48. Full results at https://blastrunning.co.uk/5km-the-meadows-results.
Rock on!
One of the 500 races in the book “World’s Ultimate Running Races“, the Black Rock 5 in Fife is as wonderfully eccentric as it gets, with the race date set using tide tables, the steepest uphill finish in the calendar and a free beer for all finishers. The whole of Kinghorn turned out to watch the fun on Friday 15 May as 1200 runners donned their second-best footwear to tackle the shallows and sand.
It was a night of celebration for Central as Aidan Thompson had a storming run at the front to take the men’s title in 21:56, just outside Jamie Crowe’s course record, and Kaydan Day finished second U20 in 24:27. It was even better in the women’s category as Morag Millar vanquished the field in 26:16 with Jen Wetton clinching third in 27:37.
Mixed in among those prize winners, Jamie Stevenson had a strong run in 24:52 with Scott Green scoring 27:02 and Lewis Millar in a rare race outing showing that he’s still got it as he finished in 27:53. Tony Disley was rightly delighted to be seventh V50 in 28:39 and was hotly pursued by younger men Chris Watson in 28:43 and Colin McCreadie in 29:13.
As the flow of finishers built up, Gordon Appelbe worked well for his 31:34 as did Stephen Moore in 32:46 and Alastair Cunningham was well up the V60s with his 34:03 clocking. Eve Conroy added to her repertoire of races as she finished in 37:16, Linda Cunningham set her best time on this course of 40:57 while Rhona Scott and Claire Thompson finished side by side in 44:13.

Day 1
