Dumbarton Babcock 10k

The Dumbarton Babcock 10k has a beautiful model of the Cutty Sark on display near the start, made by the nearby Denny’s shipyard where the boat was built in 1869. On the course on the evening of Thursday 21 May there were many cutty sarks travelling at speed along the flat out and back course along an old railway line with a closing loop around the streets of the town. Kevin Amos was the lead Central finisher in a very brisk 38:20 with Tony Disley not far behind in 40:09, Don Shaw running strongly in 41:45 and Hugh Buchanan pleased with his 46:13 showing. Youth Development League Match 2, Kilmarnock

Great day on 24 May at Kilmarnock where our 20 young athletes took part in the second YDL meeting of the season. Lighter on numbers than we would have liked due to illness and injury, but those who made it along served up a treat.

Confirmed results are not through as yet but among the athletes, there was a good deal of confidence PBs were achieved.

I know for certain Christian Mphande achieved a new PB of 1.55m while taking second place at high jump.

Normally, first attempt at a new event makes for a (relatively) straightforward PB – but some events are more technical than others, and I’m sure most would agree the pole vault probably tops it in terms of degree of difficulty. So to be brave enough to come forward to try it at competition level is in itself fantastic after only one or two practice sessions (thanks Dave Ingram!). Zara Hector and Hugh Thomas both took to the field ready to give it their best shot, only for Zara to be denied the chance to try due to a technicality. Hugh however did get the opportunity and went on to clear multiple heights and set his new PB of 2.13m. Hopefully not too long before Zara gets her opportunity!

First time competing in the league we had Brooke McCreadie and Rory Meyler. Brooke did a great job of being in two places at once while Rory overcame a pre-race knee injury to complete his first competitive 1500m to secure points for Central – great efforts on both counts!

There were plenty of notable performances but I should mention Zara Williams who ran a very controlled 1500m to take first place on what was a busy weekend for her. The U16 girls 4x300m relay team also ran an outstanding race – despite being less keen about it being the 300m rather than the 100m!!

Huge well done to all who took part and to the logistics crew who got everyone there on time (no mean feat!).👏👏👏

Special thanks to Fiona, Jonny and Laurie for being our parent helpers on the day. On that note, we need more parent helpers to support our athletes in the various leagues – let me know if you are happy to help as we need to arrange for you to go through the PVG process.

Finally, thanks to Natalie who came out the blue on the day (cheers John McD for pointing her in our direction!!) to put our athletes through their paces and help prepare them through the day – very much appreciated.
